Distance teaching

Distance teaching

Education is intended to convey knowledge and skills to pupils and students. Teachers, teachers and educators follow an educational strategy to transfer the knowledge. The knowledge is regularly tested and the results evaluated. Distance learning is possible via computers but often provides additional challenges for teachers, educators and lecturers.

Important in education

  • Trust
A relationship of trust between the teacher, tutor or lecturer and the pupil or student is important for a good transfer of knowledge. Pupils and students should feel free to express criticism.
  • Good interaction
In order to teach the participants knowledge and skills, good interaction between the teacher or tutor and pupils or students is important. A good teacher adapts the subject matter to the level and learning style of the pupils or students.
  • Communication
Both verbal and non-verbal communication are essential in the transfer of knowledge. Non-verbal communication gives the learner extra information about how the learner feels and whether he/she understands the material.

Distance learning challenges

When teaching at a distance, a teacher or tutor has to deal with some extra difficulties because of that distance:

  • the pupils or students may feel less involved due to distance
  • the pupils or students may be distracted and at the same time occupied with other things
  • connection quality may vary
  • technical problems on the part of the teachers/teachers or pupils/students

Solutions for distance learning

A teacher or lecturer can respond to these additional challenges:

  • increasing involvement by having a video and audio connection with all participants in distance learning
  • involve the pupils or students who have been distracted in the training through questions. Actually, just like it happens in a classroom or lecture hall.
  • possibly motivate the individual pupils or students by means of private messages.
  • use good equipment:
    • modern computer
    • fast network connection (use a fixed Ethernet cable instead of WiFi or 4G)
    • fast internet connection
  • Use good online video conference software:
    • which offers good video and audio
    • where a presentation of the lesson material can be shown within the environment
    • where private messages can be sent
    • where a teacher or educator can temporarily turn off the audio of individual participants
    • which has the possibility of splitting up into groups
    • be able to work together on shared documents, e.g. to take notes together
    • a shared whiteboard

BigBlueButton

Teachers, teachers and educators need to be good at their subject and at conveying their knowledge and skills. Distance learning can be difficult.
That is why we offer BigBlueButton support to educational organisations.

BigBlueButton is open source software which means that it does not impose any restrictions on users: Open source software is free to use, modify and distribute.

BigBlueButton is extremely suitable for distance education:

  • the video and audio quality is excellent
  • the teacher or lecturer can show a presentation within the environment
  • private messages may be sent between the participants in the course of the course
  • the teacher or educator may temporarily turn off the audio of individual participants
  • pupils or students can be divided into groups and come together in breakout rooms
  • educational participants can work together on shared documents
  • The software has a shared whiteboard function on which participants can draw to make their story clear.

Possibilities of BigBlueButton in remote education

  • Being able to mute everyone at the same time sometimes has its advantages.
  • Putting groups in separate break-out rooms to work together on e.g. a document or a presentation.
  • Doing business on a whiteboard. Pupils can join in.
  • Pupils can find out about certain things.
  • Do you use the "Moodle" LMS system for online courses? Then simply integrate our services into this system. We have a great deal of experience with Moodle and can help you with this.
